GRADUATE MIDWIFE

Maci Smyth Houston Midwife

"It was an honor to have Maci at my first birth. Any fear I had was instantly replaced with wisdom, compassion and reassurance. I will never forget how thoughtful and intentional she was, validating my thoughts and concerns, encouraging me and supporting me mentally and physically. She went above and beyond to make birth such a blissful and memorable experience!"

I was born and raised in Texas and right here in the Houston area! It has been home all my life!

My path to midwifery...

The start of midwifery journey really began when I was 15 and I attended a family member’s home-birth for the first time. Throughout this family members whole pregnancy, she shared so many big and small details with me involving how life-changing her care had been with a midwife in this pregnancy versus her previous care with an OB. From that time on I knew midwifery was all of my passions and interests mixed into one field and I wanted to jump in as soon as I could. It quickly became a calling on my life I could not ignore.

As I joined a school a few years later I worked very closely with over 10 midwives throughout my apprenticeship training at a birthing center in Dallas and my second apprenticeship training here at the Addice. Through these experiences I began to fall more in love with all things pregnancy, birth, postpartum and the midwifery model of care.

What I love about being a midwife is the relationships that are formed with the clients through their journey of midwifery care. It is an honor watching and providing a space for mothers and families to grow in their ability to make informed, educated, and confident decisions about their body and their babies. Being a safe place for families in this new and raw adventure of parenthood is a privilege and a joy.

My philosophy on birth is that this is a normal, physiological process that should be treated and recognized as such and the American culture has seemed to stray from that. All women deserve to be listened to and to receive compassionate and individualized care, instead of a “one size fits all” narrative. The birthing space is so sacred and I believe it should be an environment full of peace, safety, and joy for each family involved.

Beach or Mountains? I always grew up going to the mountains so now in my adulthood I am definitely soaking in all the beach time I can get now!

My Starbucks order: I’m more of a local coffee shop girl myself, but if I had to choose then I would take a matcha latte with almond milk and honey for an everyday drink! But in the fall.. a pumpkin cream cold brew for sure!
